Green bins will not be collected on Wednesday 9th July
Following a fire at the Elstow Waste Transfer Station on Friday, July 4th, Bedford Borough Council has temporarily halted its green waste collection service. The blaze has rendered the facility non-operational, triggering the council’s contingency protocols. As a result, kerbside green waste collections will be suspended across the borough for approximately two weeks starting Sunday, July 6th.
During this suspension, other waste from homes-such as household rubbish and recyclables-will continue to be collected, with materials diverted to an alternative licensed site. Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to use the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane for any green waste they need to dispose of.
Councillor Nicola Gribble, the council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, expressed regret over the disruption, stating that the decision was necessary to ensure essential services and public safety. She thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during this temporary pause.
